  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the perception and acceptance of blur in peripheral vision at Progressiv Addition Lenses (PAL). The Blur test should be developed and verified as a suitable method for measuring the visual field in PAL`s. Methods: The horizontal field of vision of four different PAL`s with a progressive corridor of 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm and a linearly increase of power were measured for three different criteria of blur in a distance of 40 cm. The limits of noticeable, tolerable and not acceptable blur were marked for a nonsense text with a letter size of 9 pt (V= 0.4 logMAR) left and right of the monocular field of view. In addition the subjects had to evaluate blurred, printed text for these criteria of blur. Results: The limits of noticeable, tolerable and not acceptable blur are at an astigmatism value of 0.65 ±0.27 D, 1.16 ±0.36 D and 1.64 ±0.48 D with a natural pupil size between 3.0 and 3.5 mm. In 40 % of cases the limits of blur are significant not different for each subject. There is a correlation between willingness of tolerance to read blurred texts in everyday life and evaluation of blurred, printed text. Conclusion: The marked fields of view correlate with the horizontal increasing of unwanted astigmatism, but repeatability of visual angle with variation ≤ 2° cannot be detected with the Blurtest. The definition, perception and tolerance of blur in workday situations depend on individual experiences and standard of vision and reading performance
